Switzerland switzerland

I've been here for 4 months now, and I'm glad to say I feel at home!
It's fairly easy to navigate the city- and I think I might love it.

Especially now, at Christmas time. The streets are eerily quiet, and the city's submerged in fog. In fact (my family might get tired of hearing me say this) but when I'm outside I feel like I'm walking in a dream. Did I mention all the christmas lights? Whimsical.

My gorgeous friend from Lyon visited me for this first (extended) weekend of Christmas break, which was a great opportunity to spend time with the camera while exploring.

Boréal Café

Lac Léman

Record Shop

Place bel-air

We mostly spent time traipsing in the streets, but also went thrift shopping, record shopping, and to explore cafés and restaurants (yes, it was slightly expensive- but the mochaccino I'm drinking is worth it).
Christmas is in two days, and as much as I love foggy weather, I am longing for snow. The snow is playing hooky. Where has it gone? It is not even in the nearby mountains, which is alarming given that my family going skiing in one week (actually, if I'm to be honest I'll admit I am sort of relieved- this means we can take walks instead (more photo opportunities!) and sit around in Chalets while I read my book).

xx

Sunflower blogger award!

Hello everyone. It has been a long time!
I am on summer vacation right now, and for a brief moment I started feeling bad about not posting more on this little corner of the earth. But then I realized how very lucky I am to have so much going on in my life. So I'm not going to apologize. NEVER APOLOGIZE for living your life to the fullest! The best part of living is being out in the world, with the people you love, DOING what you love.

Anyway. A long, long time ago, Natasha from Savouring Each Moment nominated me for the Sunflower Blogger Award. She is a great blogger so you should definitely check her out! Thanks Natasha :)

The rules:

1) Share 11 facts about yourself.
2) Answer the questions asked by your nominated blogger.
3) Nominate your bloggers
4) Set 7 questions for your nominated bloggers.

11 facts about myself:
1) I'm learning how to surf this summer (YAYY!)
2) I just came back from a trip to Paris with my best friend a few days ago.
3) Cats. Cats. Cats. KITTEHS.
4) I am 15 years old.
5) When I was little I imagined that at age 15 I'd be living the life of Gabriella Montez from High School Musical.
6) Indeed, when I was little I was OBSESSED with High School Musical.
7) My obsession has now moved on to the movie How I Live Now (GO CHECK IT OUT).
8) I overthink. I'm not going to say "way too much" because I personally think that it's great to THINK.  I'm not even sure if I agree with the term overthinking
9) I am vegetarian.
10) Sometimes I'm slow. I tend to enjoy the process instead of getting right to the point.
11) I made a pact with myself that I will NEVER, EVER be a smoker.

Natasha's questions:

1.      What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?(lame, I know… ><)
This is not a lame question, Natasha, NOT LAME!!! But there are sooo many flavors!!! I have to say that I absolutely love Ben&Jerry's Peanut Butter Cup (I think it might actually be heaven under the form of ice cream) but I also love a good mint-chocolate-chip. Hmm.

2.      What’s your favorite kind/brand of chocolate?
I don't think I can answer this question. There are too many brands of chocolate. And so many of them are exquisite! But am I allowed to say Reese's? I know it's not really a chocolate brand but it's still my favorite.

3.      If you could change your name, what would you change it to?
I never really thought this through... I'm actually quite happy with my name! I don't know many Carmens. :)
But I have thought about what I would name my daughter: India, Olivia...

4.      What’s your favorite sport?
I'm not sure I have a favorite sport! I love dancing, yoga, swimming... Even running!

5.      What was something you believed to be real (when it actually wasn’t) when you were younger?(sorry… I just can’t phrase it right :[)
Ummm... :] probably many things :]

6.      What was the weirdest food you’ve eaten?
It might not sound "weird" at first, but... Cheese. Cheese is a very, very peculiar food. Cheese is rotten milk.

7. What is one thing you wanna do but know you can never (or most probably not be able to)accomplish?
Never say never! Unless you have unrealistic dreams like "living forever", with enough determination, ANYTHING is possible. It's true!

The bloggers I'm nominating:
+ anyone else! If you want this award comment below and I'll add you to the list :)

My questions:

1) What's your astrological sign? Does your personality actually correspond to what it says about you?
2) What is your favorite social media?
3) If your home burst into flames, and you could only save three things, what would you grab?
4) What book did you last read?
5) If you had to stay the same age your whole life, what age would you pick?
6) What is your favorite snack?
7) Why did you start blogging?

Who are we trying to please?

I've always been one of the tallest, if not THE tallest girl in my group, so I have never actually known how it feels to have friends that are taller than me. I got a taste of that feeling this weekend, when I hung out with a friend who is significantly taller than me. I told my parents how different it felt, to look UP at someone, instead of looking DOWN, and then I said I hoped to gain several more inches or centimeters before I stop growing! Their response surprised me, because instead of saying "Oh yes, that would be great, let's hope it happens," they told me that being taller than I already am could be difficult in dating situations with men. They said that men most often look for women who are shorter than they are, because otherwise they don't feel tall, manly and protective enough!
What I'm about to say might sound paradoxical, given the fact that I am a tall person, but I've always wanted to be VERY tall. I'm not unhappy with the way I am, but there's just something about very, very tall people that I find extremely attractive. And all day I've been thinking about how unfortunate it is that a man would disregard a woman just because she is taller than him. And it brought me to this conclusion: Why try so hard to please a man? I think tall women are attractive, and if men have a complex, why should that change how I feel? Why should men's hang ups change MY tastes? Who knows, I might not even ever find the right guy for me! We should all focus on what we TRULY admire, not on what we "should" admire. Do you agree?

Tall Girl Problems well at least some guys are taller than me so maybe I won't be a lonely cat lady or maybe I will..... Darn it
Hahaha. x)

April in Pictures

How was your April? My April was pretty crazy (good crazy!). It consisted primarily of major studying, the visit of my cousins, and catching up on all the books and blogs I wanted to read and didn't have time to before.

Here's what I posted on Instagram for April:

This is my cousin Alex and me chillin' in the parc near my house. This was one of the first nights my cousins were visiting. They stayed with us for a week and we had so much fun!

We took a long bike ride one morning. Although the air was brisk it was nice to see all the blooming flowers.

On the last night of their visit, instead of sitting around like the screen-obsessed modern kids we are, my cousins and I practiced our mad drawing skills. What do you think?

Last Saturday, my friends came over and we made Caramel-Pecan milkshakes. This may possibly be the best milkshake recipe on earth. You have to try it ----> Caramel-Pecan Milkshakes

This is me trying out my new tee-shirt from Urban Outfitters. Did you know I'm obsessed with that store? I swear I could live in there. I had to order this tee-shirt because tragically, there is no UO in Lyon.

P.S:   Did you notice the change in my blog design? The wonderful Rose C. has been re-designing it for me, and she's doing a great job! Thank you, Rose!

Sunday is a baking day

Hey guys!
Just wanted to post some pics of what I baked last weekend.
To me, a perfect Sunday afternoon means getting together with friends and baking while listening to all styles of music.

We listened to metal while baking these absolutely divine Maple Pecan Shortbread Squares...

...And to hits from the 80's while baking these totally scrumptious vanilla cupcakes.

Oh, and by the way, one of the friends I was baking with owns this totally awesome baking blog. Please check it out (warning: her food is very tempting):

Don't you just love baking?

Liebster Award #2!!!

Around Christmas, I was nominated for my second Liebster award. :D
I know, I know, we're in FEBRUARY now, but at least I'm participating, alright?!
I am super honored to be part of Ayesha's nominees. Thank you, Ayesha! <3

Here are the rules of the Liebster award:
  • Link back to the nominator
  • State 11 Facts about yourself
  • Answer the 11 questions given to you
  • Nominate 5-10 New Bloggers with less than 200 followers
  • Give those nominated 11 new questions
Eleven facts about me:
1. I started Irish Dance and Modern Jazz (which I used to dance when I was seven until ten years old) this year; and I love them both!
2. I want my career to involve writing. Recently I've been thinking about script writing.
3. I have two little kitties who snuggle with me at night <3
4. I want to travel the world.
5.I ride my bike to and from school every day, even if it's raining, snowing, and if it's super windy!
6. I have a needle phobia.
7. Cleaning and organizing makes me feel very calm and in control.
8. I'm an overachiever and overthinker. It gets bad, sometimes.
9. I read. A lot.
10. I like debating. I recently learned this about myself.
11. Friends are one of  the things I value most in life. I love my friends! But I do cherish "alone" time; just being by myself to sort out my thoughts when things get too hectic.

Ayesha's questions:

1.When and why did you start blogging?

I started blogging in September, 2012 and why? There are so many reasons! First of all, I want to be a writer and journalist so I thought it would be good practice and second of all, I feel that there is always so much I want to say to the world and never enough ways or time to say it... I thought blogging might be a unique opportunity to do so. And it has! Lastly, it's because I'm vegetarian and I LOVE baking and cooking so I wanted to teach people how easy and important it is to respect animals all while eating fabulous food!

2.Who is in your family?

This question would normally have a very long answer, but I'm going to make it as short as I can.
In my immediate family there are my parents, my little brother, Lorenzo, and my baby kitties, Olive and Gaspy. The rest of my big, big family lives in the US (my mom's side of the family) and in Argentina (my dad's side). Then there is my non-blood-related family: my friends. I could not live without them. They are such a big part of my life; that's why I feel I can consider them as "family".

3.What is your favorite food?

My favorite food? Only ONE?! You need to know I am pretty much obsessed with food. There is an endless number of  taste combinations out there, and I just love trying them all!
I guess I would say my favorite foods are chocolate, peanut butter... watermelon, apples...
OH, and how could I forget? I ABSOLUTELY ADORE INDIAN FOOD.

4. 5 things that make you happy?

Your questions are killing me, Ayesha. 5 things that make me happy:

reading and writing;
running;
dancing;
baking;
chilling with my friends!

5. What is your favorite piece of jewelry?

Earrings, definitely. I wear them every day.

6. If you had to wear only one color all your life, which would it be?

Hmmm... I wear a lot of black and gray, but I find  bordeaux red just beautiful. But you can't go wrong with black. So I'd choose black.

7. Whats in your handbag?

Besides the obvious items (phone, wallet, keys) I always, always, always carry a hairbrush. Otherwise my hair would constantly be a total mess! I also carry a pocket mirror, lip balm, a little pen and notebook, a guitar pick (yes, I play guitar) and... a snack (nuts, or dried seaweed...)!

8. What is your favorite beverage?

Tea. Tea. Tea. Always tea.

9. Who is your role model?

Ayesha. I cannot have one role model. It's simply not possible. I admire Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Taylor Swift, Gary Yourofsky, John Green... and many, many more!

10. Which do you pick? Comfort or glamour?

I'm not sure I can answer that. Comfort is much more important; I know that. But how fun it is to be glamourous!

11. One thing you can't live without?

Ummmm books? Tea? Friends? Physical movement? My laptop? ;)
Probably optimism. A negative mind will never bring you a positive life.

My nominees:
1. Beth Claire @ bethiquette
2. Mindy @ ~Broken Eggshells~
3. Crap Teenager @ Crap Teenager
4. Mathilde Mounier @ La Saison des Gâteaux
5. Laura @ Laura Plus Books
6. Emily Beth @ oh, how {sweet} it is
7. Ajeng Adianti @ Basic X Classic

I realize, my dear nominees, that you might not all be interested in participating, but if you are, here are my questions to you!

1. If you were of the opposite sex, what would you want your name to be?
2. What is your favorite season?
3. What meal do you like the most in a day?
4. How many hours do you sleep at night?
5. Books or movies?
6. A skill you wish you had but don't?
7. What is your favorite social media?
8. Your favorite type of vacation?
9. What is it you like the best about blogging?
10. Do you have any siblings?
11. Your most cherished possession at the moment?

I hope you enjoyed reading this! Thank you again, Ayesha!

2014, welcome!

THE Cinnamon Roll Cake

Here's a riddle: What tastes like a cinnamon roll, is less time consuming to prepare and totally knock-your-socks -off delicious?
A cinnamon roll cake!

This weekend, we had old friends from Paris visiting. On Sunday, a request was made for an "American breakfast". My mom and I took charge. Along with pancakes, an omelette, and toast, we were thinking "what is another special thing we could serve?"
What came to mind was the classic and scrumptious cinnamon roll... the problem was, cinnamon rolls take a long time to make and bake.
I dashed to Pinterest and found this recipe. It is definitely a keeper!

This cake was sooooooo yummy... incredibly, fantabulously moist and buttery.
It smelled WONDERFUL while baking and, oh, it just has one of the gooey-est cinnamon swirls. My God, THE CINNAMON SWIRLS!
And the glaze, the glaze... YUM. That's all you need to know.
We cut the glaze measurements in half, because we didn't have the appropriate cake pan (ours was less wide), and there was less surface to cover with the glaze.

CINNAMON ROLL CAKE

Ingredients:

For the cake:
3 c all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 c granulated sugar
4 tsp baking powder
1 and 1/2 c milk
2 large eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 c (1 stick) unsalted butter

For the cinnamon filling:
1 c (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 c packed light brown sugar
2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp ground cinnamon

For the glaze:
2 c powdered sugar
5 Tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

    To make the cake:
  1. Grease a 9"x13" cake pan Set aside.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180 °C  (350 °F).
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together sugar, salt, flour, and baking powder.
  4. Add milk, eggs and vanilla and whisk until smooth.
  5. Slowly add the melted butter and whisk until everything is smooth.
  6. Spread the batter in the prepared pan. Set aside.

    To make the filling:
  1. In a medium mixing bowl, beat butter with electric mixer until creamy.
  2. Add sugar, flour and cinnamon and beat until fluffy, about 2 minutes. (It will look crumbly at first but keep beating, it will come together.)
  3. Spread the filling over the cake batter, leaving at least 1 inch of space from the edge of the pan. Swirl gently with a off-set icing spatula or a rubber spatula.
  4. Bake the cake for 28 to 32 minutes or until the toothpick inserted in the cake part comes out clean.
  5. Cool the cake for 15 minutes. Pour the glaze over the cake and spread evenly.

    To make the glaze:
  1. Sift the powdered sugar over a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Add vanilla and milk and whisk together until smooth and drizzling consistency. Spread over still warm cake.
  3. Keeps covered in room temperature for up to 3 days.
  4. Enjoy!

TGIF!

My lovely readers!
I am so GLAD to be here writing for you after such a stressful week. You can't even imagine.
It's Friday! Thank goodness! I SURVIVED A WEEK OF SCHOOL!
Last Thursday I wrote a post explaining my dissatisfying class situation. I'd tried changing classes because I wasn't content with mine... In fact, I was in crisis. I had no friends, and several teachers that I'm not fond of.
The school did not accept my request to change classes.

And I'm grateful for that. Because a week later, everything seems less scary. That is the truth. I've met really nice people. I've made friends. Come to think of it, it's almost insulting to them how badly I wanted to change classes that first day.

To summarize my week, it was mostly fine, if not good. I've come to understand how BUSY this year is going to be for me.
My teachers have crammed so much information into each hour of class about the projects for the year and what they will mean for my future.
For example, in December, like all 9th graders in France, I will be attending a "stage", which is a week in the enterprise of my choice to observe how business works.
It could be anywhere from a bakery to a police station.
By the end of November I need to know where my stage will take place: this means deciding where I want to go, sending my CV and a request letter, and being confirmed.
I'm still not completely sure, but because I want to be a journalist I'm thinking a stage in the press.

Anyway, on a total other note, I wanted to announce a few changes to my blog. With my recent blogoversary, I decided I need to promote my blog a little and make it a more elaborate.
The first change you will notice is my new "Moi" picture:

The second change you will notice is the "About Moi" page. What do you think?

Also, (I still haven't done this but plan to this weekend) I am going to make a facebook page for The Veggie Polyglotographer.
For some reason, I was opposed to it the whole time I've been blogging. But I know it's a great tool for blog traffic and connecting with others. So I'm pretty excited about this!
Let me know in the comments if you have a fb page for your blog, and I'll definitely follow. :)

I hope you all have a relaxing friday night, and a weekend filled with fun!

Have to be brave

Today was my first day back to school. I'm not going to lie and pretend that it was wonderful, because it wasn't.
I was put in a class where I have no friends. Nobody with whom I can gossip with about the teachers, nobody whom I can rush to when we are assigned group projects.
My friends are all in classes - together.
Without me.
So frankly, it sucks.
BUT, after madly trying to petition to change classes, I decided to be open-minded about the whole situation. Because it may not work out the way I want it to. And I can't just run away from people because they already know each other, but they don't know me.
And after all, the magic mostly happens when you're put out of your comfort zone.
I'm going to be strong, because I've realized that this is not a big deal and it's just what a billion other teens are going through right now: change.
And I know that so many good things are coming. I can feel it.

It's almost time to say bye-bye to summer... so here's a recap of my blogging:

My first camp experience

Hi everybody! What have you been up to here in the blogosphere?
Can you guess why I don't know?
I was at camp!
For the first time ever!
I returned on Saturday after an exhilarating week of catamaran, paddle surf, kayak, night activities and dances, card games, pranking, ice cream testing and much, much more. It was honestly so much fun. I met some amazing people and lived crazy moments which I'll never forget.
Like, what do you do when your roommates bring guys into your bungalow at two a.m and keep you up with their loud talking until 4 a.m? And when the subject of their conversation is YOU and how inferior you are to them?
You sneak out of your window movie-style is what you do. Then after telling on them and getting them busted for the rest of the week you plot the pranks you're going to pull on them on the last night.
Or what do you do when some drunk guy approaches you on the beach at night and tries to pick you and your friends up?
You tell him to get lost then you track him down the next day and make friends with him after you've informed him how wasted he was.
The list of crazy first-times is too long to write. So take a look at all of these pictures instead.

Catamaran
We did a lot of Catamaran. It was such a blast! the biggest part of the sport, I believe, was all the giggling and screeching when big waves appeared and we thought the boat was going to tip over. Haha. :)

Night at camp was game time! The camp counselors did a really great job of organizing different hilarious activities and themes for every night.

Bailey and I took pictures with our camp friends, especially with Penelope, a girl I wish I had around all the time.

After we were done packing up our bags and cleaning the bungalows, Penelope, Bailey and I went to the beach bar and ordered the BEST ice coffees I have ever tasted. They were SO good.

Ice Coffees

And last, creds to Bailey for this picture! I just love it.
Port Grimaud

When the time to leave the campsite came I couldn't hold back my tears because I knew I was going to miss all these people so much!
How is it possible to become so attached to a group of people in just one week? I never knew that leaving Port Grimaud would hurt so much...
This was first time EVER at camp and I had no idea how fast a week could pass!

Watch this- another amazing 13 y/o with a project!

My last post was about an awesome 13 year old, and here I am to write about another one! This is Nina, my close friend from school. We have known each other for over a year now, and in that time I have heard her sing lots of times. And trust me, she is an amazing singer.
I am SO jealous of her voice! Just listen to this!

I find it so cool that teens like us have so many ways to express ourselves, through singing, writing... and the web facilitates it!
Every Saturday Nina will be posting a new video, so subscribe to her YouTube channel to stay tuned! :)

Somebody special was born 13 years ago

My dweeb, it has already been a year and a month that we've known each other, but I feel that I've known you my whole life.
It's never boring with you. You make me smile even when i'm at my worst. You mean so much to me, and I know you'll always be there. Things I have never been able to share before with anybody I have shared with you. It's like we think alike sometimes (remember the people that look like animals? lol). I don't know anybody like you (except for yourself hahaha.)
Tomorrow you will have been alive for 13 years.
Happy birthday!!!! :)

Joyeux anniversaire!!! :)

Mid-September, 2012

Mid-september, for me, has been as mid-september-ish as it can be. After a long, relaxing summer, the reintroduction to school has been quite easy and fun! I am not writing about anything specific today, just about a few subjects of my mid-september.

1. Fanny's birthday party (happy birthday again!) was loaded with fun. We met at her house, then headed to the park, and stuffed our faces with candy and a delicious sponge cake. We played games, climbed trees, opened presents, and had a very good time!

I wasn't able to take many pictures, but here you are, my friendy friend friends (E and S in front, the rest walking in a group)!

E getting a lick from one of the deer at the parc de la tête d'or.

E et une biche simpatisent.

2. Cooking and baking.

I have experimented making new vegetarian (duh!) dishes, yes, mom, with your help:
J'ai experimenté des plats végétariens, oui, avec ton aide, maman:

baba ganouj

piedmontese stuffed red pepers on a bed of polenta

lemon/dill egg salad

meringues
And meringues! Didn't they turn out beautifully!
meringue

neighbor's cat
 3. The neighbor's cat. He has appeared quite a few times at the window in the hallway to greet me when I get home. It's kinda creepy sometimes. He will just stare at you.

Still cute!

4. Running. I don't have a picture of me all red and sweaty inching along the road, sorry.
I'm exagerating. I have improved at running, and I am not at the stage of inching along the road any more. After the family trip to the U.S, it was kind of difficult to start again, but I am definitely back on track now. My running music at the moment: madness (Of Muse) and payphone (Maroon 5).

Bye bye!
